More than 15 billion euros ($16 billion) of pre-euro banknotes and coins haven’t been exchanged for euros.
About a third of the total is now worthless, with 12 of the 19 national central banks having given up their coin-redemption duties and the deadline for exchanging banknotes having passed in Finland, France, Greece and Italy. Luckily for the Germans -- who have stashed away just under half the region’s hidden treasures -- there’s no need to rush: the Bundesbank has said it will “indefinitely” exchange “unlimited amounts” of deutschmarks.
