Down Under, the ASX 200 climbed 0.86 percent at the open, with its materials sub-index up 1.27 percent and the financials sub-index up 1.21 percent.
Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 index looks set to gain, with CME Nikkei futures up 0.8 percent at 18,645.5 and Osaka futures up 0.83 percent at 18,650, both strongly above the previous close at 18,496.69.
The Dow Jones industrial average closed up 1.55 percent at 19,549.62, the 12th all-time high close since the U.S. election. The S&P 500 1.32 percent to 2,241.35, also a record close, and the Nasdaq composite finished up 1.14 percent at 5,393.76..
U.S. crude futures settled down 2.3 percent at $49.77 a barrel, while Brent settled down 1.7 percent at $53.00.
