Australia's ASX 200 was up 0.09 percent, supported strongly by its all ordinaries gold sub index, which was up 1.55 percent in early morning trade.
Nikkei futures in Chicago gained 1.39 percent at 19,380, while Osaka futures were down 0.39 percent at 19,040; the Japanese benchmark index last finished at 19,114.37 on Friday and was closed for the past two sessions.
Over in the U.S., the Dow Jones industrial average closed up 0.6 percent at 19,881.76, the S&P 500 finished up 0.85 percent at 2,257.83 and the Nasdaq composite gained 0.37 percent, to close at 5,429.08.
The greenback surged to a 14-year high, up 0.7 percent in the first two trading days of 2017, adding to a 3 percent appreciation in 2016.The dollar index was trading up 0.99 percent at 103.22.
Oil prices dropped more than 2 percent on Tuesday in the U.S.Overnight, global benchmark Brent fell 2.4 percent to settle at $55.47 a barrel, while U.S. crude tumbled 2.6 percent at $52.33.
