Markets in Asia ended mixed with the backdrop of an important speech by Fed Chairman Jerome Powell today at 5:00 PM.
In China, Shanghai Composite rose 0.21% and Shenzhen Component rose 0.13%. Shenzhen Composite lost 0.21%.
In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index ended in positive territory, rising 0.14%.
In Japan, Nikkei 225 rose 0.32% and Topix 0.30%. In South Korea, Kospi is down 0.15%.
Tensions between Japan and South Korea have escalated after Seoul said they were agreeing a pact with Japan on shared intelligence amid an increasingly bitter trade conflict between the two countries. The agreement was created to share information on threats by Korea as missile and nuclear activity.
In response, defensive stocks in South Korea jumped. Victek jumped 8.49% before falling to just 2.38%. Firstec climbed 1%.
The Korean won continued to weaken to 1213.70 against the US dollar, rising from 1202.
In Australia, the ASX200 rose 0.33%.
The MSCI Asia-Pacific ex-Japan index remained flat.
