Shares in Asia traded with investors' response to the Hong Kong Regional Council elections.
The Hang Seng Index led the growth, jumping 1.5%. Shares of insurer AIA jumped 2.78%. The leap came after pro-Democratic candidates won by a huge majority.
Months of civil disobedience and protest led to the election. Victory can end the unrest.
Major Chinese stocks remained largely mixed. Shanghai Composite rose 0.1%, while Shenzhen Component fell 0.66%. Shenzhen Composite also fell 0.496%.
Nikkei225 rose 0.92% led by Fast Retailing, Softbank Group and Fanuc.
Kospi also rose by about 1.25%, with Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix the main drivers behind the index.
The ASX200 was up 0.6%.
MSCI Asia ex - Japan rose 0.74%.
