Futures pointed to a tepid open for Asian markets on Tuesday, taking cues from a soft finish in U.S. stocks and with no market-moving data due.
Australia's SPI futures were flat at 5,335, compared to the S&P/ASX 200's Monday close at 5,318.94.
Nikkei futures in Chicago were also near flat at 16,540, while Osaka futures fell 0.54 percent at 16,560. The Japanese benchmark index finished at 16,654.60 in the previous session.
In the currency market, the Japanese yen retreated firmly back to the 109 handle against the dollar, with the pair at 109.24 as of 6:34 a.m. HK/SIN on Tuesday.
Down Under, the Reserve Bank of Australia governor, Glenn Stevens, is due to speak at the Trans-Tasman Business Circle boardroom briefing, which is likely to be his last official speech as governor.
