Brexit: All eyes on Brussels today

Theresa May

How long will she get? She requires European leaders to extend it until June 30 - just before the first European Parliament session in early July - but so far the European Commission has spoken about prolongation only after May 23 so as not to complicate political procedures.

Given this, the current picture is such that euro leaders will only support it if it gains a significant vote in parliament. For the summit this week do not expect a real solution to the extension. If nothing else, we could see some discussions about the possibility of Brexit continuing until June 30, but any decision to do so will only take place next week.

May has already confirmed that he will not let things go after 30 June, so if he loses the vote, it will either be Brexit without a deal or cancel Clause 50 as a whole.

However, the amendments that will be tabled on Monday can make things more complicated. Indicative votes will be essential for observation, as this may lead to a decision by the Parliament on a longer Brexit and eventual withdrawal of May.

Whatever the case, there will not be a very clear scenario about how all this will be played next week. As such, expect a more consolidated and chopped trade in pounds before more clarity on the case.
