Greece will need to fast-track a package of economic measures through parliament by Wednesday if it wants a chance to receive financial aid from its eurozone partners, Latvian Finance Minister Janis Reirs said Sunday.
Stepping out of five hours of talks with other eurozone finance ministers in Brussels, Mr. Reirs said the burden was on Athens to rebuild trust.
To that end, he said, Greece must take action and adopt significant legislative changes.
"Declarations and promises won't do," Mr. Reirs said in a telephone interview. "We need changes in specific laws such as pension and value-added tax. We need documented evidence of the necessary legislation to consider disbursing any funds."
With Latvian pensioners receiving a fraction of what retirees get in Greece, Mr. Reirs said the small Baltic nation had limited financial and political leeway.
"We can lend them funds but we can't make gifts," he said.
