Sterling soared after Mark Carney said the BOE may need to begin raising interest rates soon.
The S&P 500 Index rebounded from the biggest drop in six weeks as bank shares rallied, while technology benchmarks pushed higher. Emerging-market assets slumped.

Currencies
The euro rose to $1.1380, the highest level since June 2016.
The pound jumped 1.1 percent to $1.2954.
Stocks
The S&P 500 Index added 0.8 percent.
Bank shares surged 1.2 percent as the Treasury yield on 10-year notes topped 2.20 percent.
The Stoxx Europe 600 Index was little changed.
Commodities
WTI futures advanced 0.9 percent to $44.61.
Gold rose 0.3 percent to $1,251.35 an ounce, climbing for a second day.
