The rise of natural gas has hit long-term coal contracts hard in the U.S., reducing them by half in less than 10 years, Bloomberg New Energy Finance analyst William Nelson says in a new report. Abundant gas makes it easy to switch away from coal, and coal plants can’t commit to long-term purchases without predictable demand. Energy Secretary Rick Perry has proposed subsidizing coal plants for keeping 90-day stockpiles.
