Daimler opened an investigation for "possible indications of irregularities" in its emissions after a request from the United States Department of Justice announced the owner of the Mercedes-Benz late Thursday night.
The company said it will cooperate with authorities in the investigation, but revealed few additional details.
Daimler were asked to examine "the process associated with exhaust emissions in the US," the group said.
The announcement came just hours after VW offered to buy back 480,000 cars in the US to end the scandal with emissions after months of negotiations with regulators.
Daimler is confronted, which the company described as "unfounded".
German auto manufacturer will report quarter results on Friday morning.
