David Winton Harding is a British businessman, founder and CEO of Winton Capital Management. He previously co-founded Man AHL (former Adam, Harding & Lueck).

Harding prefers quantitative investment strategies using research as a basis for decisions about the trade. His philanthropic activities include the creation of a chair at the University of Cambridge and the center of the Max Planck Institute for Human Development, both are devoted to the study of risk and the establishment of a program of research in the physics of resistance in the Cavendish Laboratory at Cambridge University.

David studied physics in college St. Catherine University of Cambridge, graduating in 1982 with honors. Later the same year he started practice at Wood Mackenzie, a stockbroker. After two years, he joined the brokerage firm futures Johnson Matthey & Wallace, as a trader of commodity futures.
In 1985, Harding became futures trader for Sabre Fund Management, one of the first advisors for commodity trade (CTAs) in the UK. He relied on his scientific background to design programs for commercial futures markets, he stayed in the company for two years to the founding of Adam, Harding & Lueck (AHL) in 1987 with Michael Adam and Martin Luek.

The company was established as a quantitative AHL focused CTA. In 1989, ED & F Man (which later became Man Group) bought a 51 percent stake in the company. When Man has bought the entire company in 1994, Harding became head of Man Quantitative Research. In 1996 he left to form his own company. According to Barron's, Harding left after Man was disappointed by the lack of emphasis on research and bureaucracy at work in a large company.

Harding founded Winton Capital Management, a company for investment management in 1997. It was named after his first name and the first name of his father. According to the magazine Hedge Fund Review, its aim is to show that business can be successful on the basis of empirical research, rather than relying on marketing. Inspired by US hedge fund asset management Renaissance Technologies, Harding hired scientists in the company, to create a strong research environment and to use quantitative statistical surveys of market trends to inform their trading decisions.
