China said it has won the promise of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to denuclearise the Korean peninsula. Xi Jinping in the face of China has given his word that his country will have close relations with its isolated neighbor.
After two days of speculation, China announced that Kim had visited Beijing and met Xi during the official visit.
Beijing has traditionally been the closest ally to secret North Korea, but ties have been torn apart by North Korea's pursuit of nuclear weapons and China's support for severe US sanctions in response to the nuclear program.
"Our consistent position is to engage in denuclearization on the peninsula, in accordance with the will of the late President Kim Il Sung and the late Secretary-General Kim Jong Il," Kim said.
North Korea is ready to talk to the United States and hold a summit between the two countries, he said.
"The question of denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula can be resolved if South Korea and the United States respond to our efforts with goodwill, create an atmosphere of peace and stability while taking progressive and synchronous measures to make peace," Kim said.
The United States is still mute about it, while South Korea believes Kim's visit to China is a big step forward to the planned North Korea-US summit.
Despite the good intentions of the North Korean leader, it is too early to expect a change of regime in the country. However, history shows another. Such aggressive policies led by dictators around the world end in the same way - downsizing or voluntary abdication because of the inability to cope with the people's desire to change their way of life in the country.
