The founder of Tesla and Space X, Elon Musk, said that early 2019 will begin the first stage of the shipping program to Mars. The privately funded company aims to carry a cargo mission to the Red Planet by 2022. Space X's ultimate goal is to plant seeds on Mars to lay the foundations for climate change for the better.
At the annual Austin-Texas Technology and Cultural Festival, Musk said he was building the first interplanetary ship which could reach Mars, and his first shorter missions will be made early next year, most likely to the moon.
Mukk intends to do all this through the BFR (Big F*cking Rocket) system. Musk promises that flights with the new ship will cost less than Falcon 1 initial missions - $5 to $6m.
"What I hope is that the BFR will make the rest of the world believe the trip to Mars is possible and will follow my example," Musk said.
"Why do I hope so?" Although Mars is a smaller planet than Earth, humanity footprint will need a lot of resources, as we will start from scratch in an unprecedented environment."
In the near future, Mars will need glass domes, power stations and a large amount of basic life supplies, Musk warned. It is then that I expect a real explosion of entrepreneurial activity, because Mars will really need a lot.
