Greece starts debt talks with IMF: report

Greece has begun to negotiate with the International Monetary Fund on a plan to help the country better manage its debt repayments, Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis said in a newspaper interview.

“I don’t see why (the IMF) shouldn’t accept an extension like they always do in cases like this, at least to the end of the year,” Varoufakis told Italian daily la Repubblica.

Varoufakis said his tour of Europe to visit leaders, including European Central Bank President Mario Draghi, wasn’t to ask for favors, but rather to set out an agreed program for the repayment of Greece’s debt.

“I’m optimistic that the problem will be resolved,” Varoufakis said. “The other day with the British financial community, I had favorable feedback and they understood very well what our problems are. They were surprised that a radical leftist had come up with a plan worthy of a bankrupt lawyer.”
