Known as the “Wizard of Oz” due to his successes on the financial market, the Sydney- born Greg Coffey started his carrier at BT Investment Management in 1994. He traded on the Emerging markets, where he had an average return to investors of 22%. In 2003 Greg joined the GLG Partners. By 2005, Coffey managed his own fund at GLG, reportedly earning two-thirds of the company’s performance fees. The reason for his is fame is due to the decline of a golden “handcuff” offer of $250m to stay in GLG Partners.
After leaving the company, Greg joined The Moore Capital Management, where Mr. Bacon called him “one of the most impressive traders in the world”. When he joined the company, Coffey headed the Emerging Markets Fund. At one stage during his career he successfully predicted a billion dollar portfolio.
Mr Coffey has mansions in London and Sydney, and bought the sprawling Ardfin estate in the Hebridean Island of Jura in 2008 when it was on the market for £3.5million.
Greg retired in 2012 at the age of 41 years. His comment was:“The demands of my growing family mean that I am unable to commit to the market with the same intensity going forward. I plan on seeing much more of my wife and children and spending time in my home country, Australia”.
However most people in this business tend to make comeback after a short break. Whether or not this will happen is yet to be unveiled.
