Honorary and art dealer, Robert Simon bought a painting by an unknown artist in 2005 and asked his girlfriend, Diane Modestini, to restore him. Her work on the piece eventually led to the discovery that it was Leonardo da Vinci's "Salvator Mundy".
Expectations for the auction were that the picture would be sold for about $ 100m, but as this is the last of 20 surviving paintings sold, buyers were prone to mockery.
For comparison, the price is twice as high as the $ 179.4 million paid two years ago. for "Women of Algiers of Pablo Picasso".
Alex Rotter, chairman of Christie's post-war and contemporary art department, placed the winning telephone offer after a 19-minute bidding war with at least five rivals, with initial bids starting at $10m.
