Lithium is on a tear in 2017. The Global X Lithium & Battery Tech ETF has nearly tripled the returns of the S&P 500 Index and has beaten the Bloomberg Commodity Index by 40 percent. The price has soared as electric cars have increased their share of the global auto fleet. The ETF invests in the stocks of lithium miners and battery producers. Lithium carbonate was up about five percent to average $14,250 a ton in July from June, according to Benchmark Mineral.
