Billionaire Mark Cuban recently proposed Elon Musk's advice: "Be yourself."

This advice sounds slightly surprising given Musk's behavior in recent months. At the same time, the words of Cuban remind everyone of what sets apart real innovators from traditional businessmen - and what they have to do to succeed.

2018 is a tough year for Musk. The CEO of Tesla and SpaceX described last year as "excruciating" and admitted that he had to sleep in the office to meet the deadlines for the new Tesla cars.

This admiration prompted Cuban and about a dozen other writers, editors and entrepreneurs to share their support for Musk in a recent Popular Mechanics article.

Cuban likened Musk to personal computing pioneer Alan Kay who once said: "The best way to predict the future is to invent it."

The vision combined with strong passion is what separates the innovators from the other leaders. "When you invest in a company run by an entrepreneur like Elon, you are investing in the mindset and approach that an entrepreneur brings to the table as much as you are valuing the net present value of future cash flows," Cuban said.

True innovators put their mission first, Cuban has previously explained, and it's that commitment to a mission that will drive an entrepreneur's company to new heights. "That's the nature of great companies. [Top innovators and entrepreneurs] don't cash out like me. They stay there because they're committed and dedicated," he said.

"While some talk about what someone else can create, Musk goes out and does it," Cuban writes in his article "Popular Mechanics". "This is not typical for public companies that are predominantly run by hired executive directors," he adds.

Mark Cuban says he does not know Elon Musk and does not have shares in his companies, but he still has two Tesla cars.

In conclusion, the entire Cuban advice is: "Be yourself. Be true to your mission. Respect your investors. Ignore your critics.".
