Angela Merkel urged her colleagues in the European Parliament to give the UK more time to avoid chaotic Brexit, although Theresa May asks the EU, Brexit to happen next month.
In her commentary on the extraordinary meeting between European leaders today, Merkel firmly stated his support for May and said: "We have only 59 hours to avoid the chaotic exit of the UK from the EU, which does not fit our interests."
In front of the Bundestag, she said the British Prime Minister has declared her determination to find the right way out of the situation, along with the opposition from the House.
Merkel said: "We know that negotiations of this type between different parties with different ideologies require endurance and the ability to compromise, so the German government believes that we need to give both countries enough time together to achieve a" orderly "Brexit .
During his visit to Brussels for his meeting with European leaders, May voiced his position that he would be able to leave the UK by May 22nd and that he would avoid participating in the European parliamentary elections. May has offered European leaders an extension of Brexit until June 30th.
Any extension, however, will be given with specific conditions to the UK. Europe, of course, has its expectations, and it does not intend to impede the proper functioning of the European institutions. In addition, the UK will still have to show its readiness to participate in the European Parliament elections.
In conclusion, the Chancellor of Germany stated that Europe is approaching a historic moment: for the first time in history, a country leaves the European Union. How will we look at these events in five or ten years? Merkel has firmly stated that all 27 members of the Block should unanimously respect the UK's desire.
