Aibo is an autonomous four-legged robot with high-tech capabilities.

Sony first launched a robotic dog in 1999, which was selling pretty well - more than 150,000 units were sold, despite its high price of 2000USD. In the next two years the company released two additional models and in 2006 the company officially stopped production and maintenance, focusing more on business decisions.

The new version comes with a powerful computer chip, OLED display, the ability to connect to the Internet via WiFi/LTE, self-learning artificial intelligence, the option to exchange information between different dogs, and more. Like its predecessor, the new toy responds to voice commands, can bark, wig his tail and perform tricks.

Sony already accepts Aibo pre-orders from customers in Japan, and sales will start on January 11, 2018 at a price of 198,000 yen ($ 1,740), along with a $26 monthly subscription to access the cloud for services like updating its software. Owners can also buy a bone - "airbone", for 2980yen (27USD)

The robotic dog with artificial intelligence is another sign that the company is ready to take new risks. After a deep restructuring, which significantly reduced the number of workers and workloads, the company is now expecting its biggest operating income report for this year.

"Sony’s mission, and reason for existence, is to be a company that piques people’s curiosity," Hirai said at a press conference in Tokyo. "I’m convinced that a robot that can connect with a family, and give them a joy, is an embodiment of Sony’s mission, and therefore asked for the development of aibo a year and a half ago."

The word "aibo" means in Japanese a companion or buddy.

And that's how Aibo looked like in the 1999 year.
