Japanese stocks only rose in Asian trading on Wednesday after yesterday, at Christmas, Nikkei 225 and Topix suffered a downturn.
The Nikkei 225 lost its pace towards the end of the session, but it remains higher today from 0.26%, while Topix rose 0.76%.
In South Korea, Kospi slid down by 1.43%, with the index being driven by the industrial sector.
In China, market participants concentrated in the "rhetorical duel" between Washington and Beijing, and trade was cautious. Shanghai Composite and Shenzhen remained broadly unchanged. Shanghai only posted a decline of 0.16%.
Markets in Australia and Hong Kong are closed today.
At FX markets, the dollar traded lower than 96.66 at levels around 96,547. The Japanese yen traded higher at about 110.12, but then fell to 110.39. The Australian dollar peaked at 0.706, but declined to 0.7043.
