Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, said the company would have a fleet of "robotaxis" on the road in 2020.
"I feel pretty confident that we will be able to release autonomous robotaxis next year," Musk said in a speech in Palo Alto. They will not be everywhere because Tesla is unlikely to receive regulatory approval everywhere, but Musk is convinced that at least their initiative will still receive some approval.
He expressed his satisfaction with the data that Tesla cars collect from the roads, and this will lead to improvements in future software. All the cars that are in production have the necessary hardware for complete autonomy of the car, leaving only the mentioned improvement in the software.
Currently, Tesla offers "Autopilot" - the advanced system, which is a "driver assistant", is available as standard in the company's cars. According to the manufacturer's information, the Autopilot can keep the car in line, accelerate and apply the brakes automatically, and respond to pedestrians and other cars on the road. Tesla can implement improvements to this system for its upcoming projects.
In addition, Tesla sells a "Full Self-Driving" or FSD for its cars worth $ 5000 or more if the software is installed after the original purchase of the car. However, the safety issue remains.
Musk has previously claimed that cars are 40% safer with the Autopilot on. But the last three fatal incidents show the opposite.
