Young entrepreneurs are shaking-up the financial services sector. Matthew Humphrey, 29, is a serial entrepreneur who has already sold a business for $100 million at age 24. He is currently the CEO and founder of LendingHome, which has raised more than $100 million in venture capital funds and lent out nearly $1 billion.
These days some investment professionals are accumulating a tremendous amount of responsibility on Wall Street before turning 30. David Knopf, 28, is already a partner at billionaire Jorge Lemann’s prominent private equity firm, 3G Capital. Knopf played a big role in the 3G-led $11 billion Burger King acquisition of Tim Hortons and Heinz’s $45 billion merger with Kraft. He is now also working at Kraft-Heinz as vice president in charge of the Planters nuts brand.
Some of the brightest minds in finance are betting that Richard Craib will create the next great quant hedge fund. At 29, Craib is the founder and CEO of Numerai, an open source quant code developer. It has the backing of chaos theory physicist Norman Packard, X-Prize founder Peter Diamandis and Renaissance Technologies co-founder Howard Morgan.
Some 30 Under 30 Finance list members are making a big impact while working at large firms. Kelly Wannop, 29, is an associate at the Blackstone Group, the world’s biggest private equity firm. A private equity investor focusing on financial and consumer retail sectors, Wannnop sits on the boards of mortgage lender Stearns and auto lender Exeter Financial. Guillaume Rabate, 28, is a vice president at Morgan Stanley, running one of Wall Street's biggest interest rates swaps desks. Kerri Cohen Saperstein, 29, is a bond trader running one of Goldman Sachs’ five high yield market making books.
The hedge fund industry is well represented on this year’s list. Andy Stafman is making his presence felt in the stock market. The 29-year-old partner at Sachem Head Capital Management is leading activist positions at the $5 billion hedge fund.
Alex Nomitch, 29, is a portfolio manager at billionaire Andreas Halvorsen’s $30 billion hedge fund, Viking Global Investors, specializing in energy names and doing well in a tough sector.
Ben Friedman, 27, is a portfolio manager at billionaire Michael Hintze’s CQS, co-managing nearly $1 billion.
