Universal Whiskey Experience founder Mahesh Patel owns one of the world's greatest private whiskey collections. He has been amassing a stockpile of 5,000 plus bottles which he estimates at being worth at least $7.5 million, and perhaps as much as $10 million.
Patel's personal Whiskey River flows from storied hooch houses spanning Macallan to Dalmore, and specializes in historic, one-off whiskies that can fetch hundreds of thousands of dollars for a single bottle, like the absurdly rare Dalmore 64 Trinitas ($160 000).
One of the standouts in the collection is the Royal Salute Tribute to Honor, a rare batch celebrating the jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II's coronation. It goes for about $250,000 a bottle. But forget about pulling off a daring whiskey heist—Patel houses his sprawling collection at secure, undisclosed locations across Scotland and the U.S.
The top whiskey collector in the United States shares that whiskey enthusiasts can begin investing in spirits at a considerably lower price. or example, a bottle of limited Whiskey Syndicate 58/6 containing 18 single malts can be had for about $160. Further up the rung, a 26-year-old single malt, Prometheus, costs $1,000.
Patel says he lives by a simple rule: "I believe in buying at least two of everything I can afford. I always open one."
