Faar Thomas "Tom" Steyer is an American asset manager, philanthropist and environmentalist.

Steyr is the founder and former senior co-managing partner of Farallon Capital Management LLC and co-founder of OneCalifornia Bank, based in Oakland Development Bank of the community. Steyer was responsible for financing the creation of TomKat Center for Sustainable Energy at Stanford University, part of the Precourt Institute of Energy (Energy Institute).

Steyr was born in New York in 1957. His mother, Marnie (née Faar) has been a teacher of spelling and reading at the Brooklyn Chamber of detention, and his father, Roy Henry Steyr, was a partner in the law firm of Sullivan & Cromwell in New York. He attended Philips Exeter Academy and graduated from Yale University with honors in Economics and Political Science, and was elected a member of Phi Beta Kappa and head of the society Wolf's. He was captain of the Yale football team. Steyr received an MBA from Stanford Business School.

Before joining Hellman & Friedman, Steyer worked at Goldman Sachs from 1983 to 1985 as an assistant in the department of risk arbitrage rokovodstvoto under Robert Rubin. He started his career at Morgan Stanley in 1979.
Steyr based Farallon Capital Management LLC in January 1986. In Farallon employs about 165 people in eight offices worldwide, and is headquartered in San Francisco, California. Farallon is considered a pioneer in the practice of investment type "absolute return" - a strategy that aims to generate positive absolute returns regardless of the direction of financial markets.

Farallon Capital uses a simple strategy. He is trying to achieve the highest return by using fundamental, bottom-up analysis. Tom Steyer using different investment strategies, has applied them on an opportunistic basis. These strategies include credit investments, investments in value, investment, event-driven arbitrage mergers, real estate investments, and direct investments. Farallon makes investments in economies around the world, including both developed and emerging markets as well as public and private debt. Steyr determined the adjustability of an investment napulno regardless of fundamental basis. And he must be doing something right. At the end of 2011, Farallon was the 14th largest hedge fund in the world, with over $ 21 billion in assets under management.

Steyer announced in October 2012 that he would resign from his post in Farallon, to focus on political activism, and in particular on his advocacy of alternative energy.
