As U.S. semiconductor shares rallied over the past month, investors increasingly used options on an exchange-traded fund tracking the industry. The number of contracts on the VanEck Vectors Semiconductor ETF jumped 46 percent since the February expiration, more than on any major fund, with the open interest reaching its highest level since November. The cost of options as measured by the 30-day implied volatility climbed 5.8 percent, while it fell for most other ETFs.
