Today's negotiations have ended. No final decision. The only result that had been achieved was the departure of all 27 European ambassadors who were eager to read the pages of the deal but were only disappointed. Here are the main highlights of rhetoric and events throughout the evening:

  • Teresa May said she would not be speaking to the media
  • Downing Street 10 came out with the news that there would be a statement in front of the cameras
  • European ambassadors decided to end the discussion
  • News of a no-confidence vote
  • Brexit supporters turn against May
  • Refute of the vote of confidence
  • From DUP, we had a statement that they would not support a deal that divides the UK
  • May with a counter-statement to DUP that the government wants to protect the interest of the whole of Britain
  • At the end of the meeting came the news that May had managed to get support from the Cabinet for now
  • The press conference, which eventually took place only, May, confirmed that the Cabinet was on her side
  • There were no resignations of ministers who did not approve of May's plan

At the height of the discussions, the pounds made quite large moves in both directions with a drop of 140 pips to a 165 pips rise. "The effect of the saw" was significant, with trade high in volumes and high volatility.

Pound found support in the blue zone and pushed 45 pips up. This is the news move that May will make a conference.

The pound turned 120 pips up after we got the news that Cabinet was on the Prime Minister's side.

Later on, the press conference of Ambassador Barnier took place. Here are the highlights of his speech:

  • Brexit deal is determining step to conclude negotiations
  • Brexit deal brings legal certainty on consequences of brexit
  • Transition period can be extended "for a limited period"
  • We have found a solution to avoid a hard border on the island of ireland
  • Only if at end of transition, whether extended or not, there is no better solution, would the backstop kick in
  • We have worked with UK on the basis of their backstop proposal
  • N. Ireland would stay in same customs territory as rest of UK, but N. Ireland would remain aligned to some EU regulations to avoid hard border
  • Clear that N Ireland economy retains unfettered access to rest of UK
  • UK will follow EU manufacturing standards to ensure level playing field in customs arrangement
  • We respect UK constitutional integrity
  • Backstop is not meant to be used
  • Objective is to reach new Eu-UK agreement before end of transition
  • Ready to start negotiating future trade deal on the day after Britain leaves EU
  • Future relationship will be on basis of duty and quota-free trade
  • Customs deal will need new agreement on fisheries
  • Much work needs to be done, the road is still long and may be difficult to get to an orderly Brexit
  • We have taken a big step today toward an orderly withdrawal
  • UK will remain our friend, our partner, our ally
  • We have made decisive progress
