The U.S.’s trade deficit with China in 2016 represented about 40 percent of its total imbalance, potentially giving fuel to President Donald Trump in hismeeting with counterpart Xi Jinping. Trump has threatened to impose higher tariffs on imports from China, as he claims the nation manipulates its currency and sells products such as steel at below-market prices. Trump has also pledged to raise taxes on goods made in Mexico, which accounted for about 13 percent of the American deficit in 2016.
