U.S. President Donald Trump promises a trade deal with the U.K. will happen quickly as the two countries prepare to begin conversations this month, but the data suggest his government may have other priorities. “There are bigger potential gains from doing a deal with Europe than with the U.K. on its own,” said Thomas Sampson, a trade expert at the Centre for Economic Performance in London. Exports to Britain are less than a third of the amount the U.S. sells to other European Union countries, Bureau of Economic Analysis figures show.
