About 24 feet from the basket, on every NBA court, there is a painted semicircle stripe, that forms the border between the shots that are worth two and three points. When the stripe was added back in 1979, the players did not know what to do, and only 3% of the shots of that season were 3 worth 3 points. Them the number raised up to 22%, but the Golden State Warriors came along and teared that assumption to pieces. Usually, the number of shots made from 23 feet is similar to those from 24 feet, however, the values are completely different - shot attempts from 23 feet has an average value of 0.76 points, when a shot from 24 feet is worth 1.09.

In 2010, Oracle Corp. founder Larry Ellison, Joe Lacob and Peter Guber have purchased the GSW team for $450 millions, which was the highest price in NBA history. Until 2010, GSW had not won an NBA title since 1975. Then, team's executives have placed the main focus on plain mathematics, which was an opportunity. Just by moving back a few inches before throwing a shot, the player could improve the return by 43%.

GSW were not the first team to apply the 3-point strategy; Phoenix Suns and San Antonio Spurs also tried another way to score. But the difference is what Warriors decided to do with the information.

From the invention of basketball, the area of the court near the basket was considered the most important. Nevertheless, GSW's executives decided to settle on their plan to exploit the 3-point line and to get the players. The criteria for the players was the height between 1,94cm - 2,04cm, which still was not enough for NBA, but suitable to perform 3-point shots.

Stephen Curry was not an NBA superstar under the previous owners, even after two seasons with Golden State Warriors. But team's new executives were absolutely sure that Mr. Curry is the centerpiece in their strategy. The executives, then, started to build a team around Curry in order to let him take more 3-point shots. In 2011, Washington State Guard Klay Thompson was brought into the team; he was taller than Curry and an excellent shooter.

Watch the Video:

During a 2013 playoff game against the San Antonio Spurs, Stephen Curry hit a 3-point shot off one foot. The shot helped inspire the team to give Mr. Curry the green light to take more crazy shots.

However, this has an idea behind as well. Thompson's shooting power would make the defenses staying around him and would limit the possibilities of surrounding Curry. Because of Thompson's height, he could both defend the other team's guard and to shoot over defenses. The main point of the strategy was that the most of the teams have only one of shooter surrounded by supporting players, but GSW was able to have two.

In 2014-15 season, Warriors added Andrew Bogut , Draymond Green, Andre Iguodala and Shaum Livingston to their list. The 3-point plan has doubled down with the new coach Steve Kerr, a member of five NBA championship teams. In that season, GSW has put forward five players that were threats to shoot 3-pointers. Barack Obama has named it the "nuclear lineup" - the team took 9% more 3-points than the previous year. The opponents were frightened and had to spread out up to the 3-point line, leaving the Warriors with much of open space. In turn, Curry, was named the league's Most Valuable Player and set a record for 3-point shots.

Currently, NBA teams are taking more 3-pointers than ever, they try to mimic Warrior's original approach. But for now, Warriors have it. They turned the 3-point line into a boundary. The future of basketball is behind the line and Curry has proved it.
