Investment guru Warren Buffett is aimed at its worst year in comparison with the rest of the US stock market since 2009, with shares in his Berkshire Hathaway conglomerate down 11.5 percent.
Despite that Berkshire has no oil and gas subsidiaries, its railway business transporting oil, coal and agricultural products.
Poor performance by insurance subsidiaries of Berkshire in the middle of the year can be attributed to lower oil prices, according to Jim Shanahan, an analyst at Edward Jones.
Berkshire also affected by big declines in two of its biggest stock market investments: American Express, which is down 25 percent this year; and IBM, which declined by 13%
