Berkshire Hathaway, the holding company controlled by billionaire Warren Buffett, has revealed a new stake in Creve Coeur-based Monsanto.
Berkshire acquired 8,041,784 Monsanto shares in the fourth quarter of 2016, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
The shares were valued at $846.1 million, according to the filing. That's $105.21 per share.
Monsanto shares closed Tuesday at $107.63.
Berkshire also nearly quadrupled its investment in Apple to over 57 million shares worth roughly $6.64 billion during the last three months of 2016.
Investors like to look at Berkshire's investments because of Buffett's remarkably successful track record although the filing doesn't make clear who made all the investments.
Based on a comparison to a filing for the period ended Sept. 30, Berkshire Hathaway also:
• Cut its stake in Verizon to 928 shares from 15 million shares.
• Cut its stake in Wal-Mart Stores Inc. by 89.3 percent to 1.4 million shares.
• Dissolved its stake in Now Inc.
• Raised its stake in Delta Air Lines to 60 million shares from 6.3 million shares.
• Dissolved its stake in Deere & Co.
• Acquired 166.6 million shares in Sirius XM Holdings Inc.
• Acquired 43.2 million shares in Southwest Airlines Co.
• Raised its stake in United Continental Holdings to 29 million shares from 4.5 million shares.
• Doubled its holdings in American Airlines Group Inc. to 45.5 million shares.
