It is obvious that trade negotiations between the US and China are coming to an end, and many experts are of the opinion that Washington can turn its attention to the EU.
These concerns come as the US and part of their European allies have encountered problems with Huawei's role in the development of 5G - something Donald Trump and his administration think is of true importance.
But it would be a mistake if Trump decides to impose additional tariffs on European products because of such differences. This is the opinion of Anthony Gardner, who was an American ambassador to the EU from 2014 to 2017
"It would be a mistake if this is Washington's fault ... and the main reason is that when you look at our common problems - American and European concerns about China - we probably have one opinion in 90% of the cases," he said .
Gardner was asked whether the differences between the US and Europe over Huawei could lead to trade complications.
According to reports, Trump has forced US allies to remove Huawei from building 5G infrastructure, warning that the technology company's equipment could be used for spying by the Chinese government. But European countries like Germany have not excluded Huawei from their national plans for 5G.
Adding to tensions in US-European relations, Trump said the EU was a "brutal trading partner" and pointed to subsidies to the Airbus block for America's damage.
Gardner said he regrets that the Trump administration sees the EU as an enemy. He added that the two economies need to work together, especially as regards China's trade practices.
