The President of the United States, Donald Trump has announced his desire to buy the largest island in the world - Greenland. However, Denmark, uncertain whether the president is joking or not, has announced that the island is not for sale.
According to earlier information, the Danes were overwhelmed by Trump's desire, with the former prime minister even directly asking if it was any joke. And it was an April Fool's Day joke that was late. A member of the ruling party in Denmark, who is helping Greenland to become an autonomous territory, called the situation "a terrible idea".
According to sources familiar with the case, Trump has repeatedly expressed interest, even turning to his White House advisers to investigate the possibility. The island, with its 2.2 million square kilometers of ice wasteland, is also home to Thule Air Base, the northernmost U.S. military base.
On September 2-3, Trump will visit Denmark to meet with Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and attend a dinner hosted by Queen Margrethe II. Greenland will be the main topic. However, the American presence on the island is not always reflected in the media for good reason: In 1968, a nuclear-carrying B-52 bomber crashed near Thule Base, causing nuclear contamination.
In addition, 80% of Greenland is covered by ice. The island has become a major stage in climate measurements as glaciers melt at a rapid pace. The island's population is about 56,000 and is mostly on the coast.
If Greenland decides to become independent, then in theory the country can build a partnership with the United States. Such detachment from the Danish authorities is regulated, but for 2021 when 300 years will be celebrated since the colonization of the island from Denmark. Another argument that supports the idea of Greenland's independence and closer relations with North America is the geographical location - the island is closer to it.
