Sony introduced two new smartphones on Thursday, which can capture 3D images, thus paving the way for added reality in 3D games and 3D printing applications.
The 5.2-inch Xperia XZ1 and the 4.6-inch compact XZ1 compact are Japan's latest electronic giant devices, which are a major competitor in the top-of-the-line smartphones. Both models come days before the introduction of the new Apple models.
Here are the new technologies available for Sony models:
- Camera capturing a video with slow motion
- Predictive shooting mode that allows users to view images taken just before the capture button is pressed.
- A display that supports High Dynamic Rangecontent, or in other words a HDR function that enhances colors to make the picture look more vibrant.
- 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 835, which is 35% more efficient than the previous generation.
- The model features new stereo speakers - the most powerful in the Xperia so far, delivering a 50% louder sound than its predecessors.
- The device's performance is also enhanced by Smart Smart, which automatically detects unused applications and clears the cache.
The phone will be available in 3 basic colors, black, blue and dark red, if desired, the customer can request a panel in color as desired.
The exclusive feature of the smartphone is the ability to capture images in 3-D. The user opens the camera and can tour an object, such as a car, a person or a dish with food. The software can then make a three-dimensional image that can be edited.
The user can place this 3D image in the Sony Enhanced Reality app. Sony also develops the ability to import these 3D images into Playstation consoles, allowing them to replace whole characters in certain games with the player's image.
The added reality where digital imaging can be imposed in the real world can be a big business. Apple with their ARKit has become a big player in this industry. Google is also working on the Tango project and is considering launching ARCore to compete with Apple. If Sony can handle their AR buzz on time, they will definitely be able to take a large share of the market for such add-on devices.
The Japanese company has been struggling for a long time with the loss of its cell phone sub-unit, but the fiscal year ended March 31 shows that the company has enough profits to simplify its portfolio and focus on certain segments of the market.
