For the first time in 16 years, palladium and platinum are about to come together, right now, as the metals approach parity. After surging more than 35 percent this year, palladium -- used mostly in pollution-control devices for gasoline vehicles -- is within $10 an ounce of platinum, which is up less than 4 percent. Citigroup Inc. reckons palladium will have a deficit of more than 1 million ounces in each of the next three years from 770,000 ounces in 2017.
