U.S. government royalties from oil and gas fields fell by 40.2 percent in 2016 from 2015, mirroring a drop in oil prices, according to the Office of Natural Resources Revenue. The Trump Administration is exploring whether to raise royalty rates as much as 10 percent. The industry says this will dramatically cut output in key shale plays while the U.S. Government Accounting Office saidin a report last month it would boost revenue by millions of dollars annually while only slightly depressing production.
