U.S. tariffs on steel may not be enough to stem the flow of imports from China and other nations. Benchmark Chinese hot-rolled steel is about $100 a ton below the price of U.S. domestic hot-rolled coil. That means it will still be cheaper for American companies to buy foreign metal even after the tariff and shipping costs are applied.
